Introduction générale

Résumé

Each of the authors of this book—historians, anthropologists, sociologists, geographers or specialists of literary history—by paying close attention to local situations and contexts, provides an account of the involvement of actors from the four continents (Africa, America, Asia and Europe) in the complex and multiform processes of (re)appropriation of ancient or exogenous forms of knowledge of know-how. By focusing their case studies on the agency of those who enact these processes, the authors propose a new approach for analyzing circulation, interaction or transfer of knowledge. The introduction aims to place their work within the continuity of theoretical thinking regarding these questions, which have been in operation in accounting for the processes that are at work when knowledge and know-how circulate. By placing emphasis on the actors, the introduction highlights the co-construction, reconstruction and even deconstruction of forms of knowledge that are said to be “in circulation”.
