From 2017 to 2020, we coordinated the development of a Japanese textbook for first and second year LLCER students of the Japanese Studies Department of Inalco (Paris). In this article, we present this project and discuss several issues such as the treatment of language variation, the choice of lexicon, the contextualization of activities and the difficulty of designing representative example sentences.
