Power and Poetry : the Poems for the Sliding Doors of the Saishô shitennô-in (1207)
Résumé
The Saishô shitennô-in residence was built for Retired Emperor Gotoba in 1207. The purpose of this paper is to understand the aesthetic, symbolic and political issues of this exceptional undertaking which combines architecture, religion, painting and poetry. First of all, we will recount in detail the genesis of the project, using mainly the Meigetsu-ki (The Journal of the Harvest Moon), the diary of Fujiwara no Teika, who was the main coordinator of the enterprise. Then, we will analyse some of the twenty-nine poems which were actually written on the sliding doors of the Palace (gosho) — the most official part of the residence — and in the private appartments of the retired emperor (jôgosho), where he lived.
La résidence Saishô shitennô-in fut construite en 1207 pour l’empereur retiré Gotoba. Le but de ma présentation est de comprendre les enjeux esthétiques, symboliques et politiques de cette entreprise exceptionnelle qui combine architecture, religion, peinture et poésie. Nous commençons par décrire en détail le genèse de ce projet en nous fondant principalement sur le Meigetsu-ki (Notes de la lune claire), les notes journalières de Fujiwara no Teika qui était le coordinateur de ce chantier. Ensuite nous analysons quelques uns des ving-neuf poèmes qui furent calligraphiés sur les cloisons du palais (gosho) — la partie la plus officielle de la résidence — ainsi que dans les appartement privés de l’empereur ((jôgosho), où il vivait.
