I write, therefore I am... Women's self-writing in 19th century Russia

J'ECRIS, DONC JE SUIS… L'ECRITURE FEMININE DE SOI DANS LA RUSSIE DU XIX E SIECLE

Catherine Géry

Résumé

The women's ego-documents written in the period from the 1760s to the 1840s constitute a mass of material whose exact volume we still do not know. At least until the mid-nineteenth century, women autobiographers, who gained access to literature without gaining access to publication, wrote for a latent or potential reading public, if one does not take into account the private circle for which their writings were initially intended. The late publication of these texts (for the most part not before the 20th century), but also their undeniable modernity (they anticipate the male literature of self-awareness and self-analysis in Russia) mean that the women authors participated in their time in the invention of a future readership. In order to question the possibility of a new historical writing of "futures of the past" (Boucheron, Koselleck) by applying it to Russian literary history seen from the women's side, the article compares several ego-documents (those of Natalia Dolgorukaya, Ekaterina Kvashnina-Samarina, Natalia Golitsyna, Ekaterina Shakhovskaya, Maria Volkonskaya) whose contribution to the history of autobiography in Russia has been cancelled out by delayed publication and reception. It analyses the resonances between texts that have had little or no circulation outside the family sphere. When Nadejda Dourova's memoirs appeared in 1836, she could not identify with any Russian model of gender or literary genre, and The Cavalier Maiden. An Adventure in Russia is the first Russian women's autobiography that presents a conjunction of lived experience, literary production, publication and reception.
