Résumé

In his mid-length film The Revolutionary (1917), which situates the political events of the time in a family setting, Yevgeni Bauer broaches the question of filiation, as does Turgenev in Fathers and Sons or Dostoyevsky in Demons. The famous Russian filmmaker, who signed his final film here after a career essentially devoted to "salon" melodrama, revisits the connection made by the writers of the second half of the 19th century between family and politics, the father/son relationship being one of the paradigms of the struggle taking place within the Russian intelligentsia between liberal and radical social forces (in the film, the father is socialist-revolutionary and the son a Bolshevik sympathizer). Shot and made in the spring of 1917, before the Bolshevik uprising, The Revolutionary constitutes a precious document in that it exposes the conflicts that accompanied Russia's entry into modernity and the Revolution: generational conflicts, socio-political conflicts, but also aesthetic conflicts, of which cinema – to become the art of Soviet modernity par excellence – was a prime indicator.
