Person deixis and space deixis in Japanese and Chinese

Deixis personnelle et deixis spatiale: japonais et chinois

Résumé

This paper analyzes the way information provided by the French text in the domain of person deixis is expressed in Chinese and/or Japanese through morphemes related to spatial deixis, (deictic directional). After describing cases where the addition of a deictic directional is expected in both languages, e.g. events involving path verbs such as sortir ‘exit’, entrer ‘enter’, etc., we further ex-plore recurrent patterns where a ventive directional is added in the Japanese text to the verb of sentences expressing sensory perceptions (auditory, visual, tactile, the latter including heat or pain...) and various psychological sensations of the first person narrator. This non-spatial use of ventive directionals in Japanese is sometimes analyzed as marking events affecting the speaker, and related to the expression of subjectivity.
