Abstract : In Standard Chinese, V-C resultative compounds form [V-DE-C] potential patterns, i.e. an infix DE is inserted between the verb V and the resultative complement C. However, a significant part of northern dialects do not use the [V-DE-C] pattern. Based on fieldwork data and second-hand data, we investigate here another pattern [V-C-LIAO], prevalent in some parts of Shanxi and Shandong, and show the relationship between suffix LIAO/LAO/LOU in affirmative and negative potential forms [V-C-LIAO] and [V-BU-LIAO] on one hand, and the cognate perfective marker on the other. We also discuss the geographical distribution of the northern potential pattern [V-C-LIAO], and provide a preliminary typology of its subtypes.
