Initiation à la syntaxe chinoise

Résumé

The book deals with syntactic problems in contemporary Chinese from two perspectives: diachronic and dialectal. Diachronic evolution in Chinese constitutes one axis, while diverse languages geographically displayed in China are another one. The first is a kind of projection of time onto space: the more one moves to the south, the more classical Chinese characteristics are preserved in dialects. The book has two aims: to answer the questions most frequently encountered by students with a dynamic approach, and to present our own research on these topics in combining the two approaches. The book is composed of seven chapters dealing with seven topics. In each chapter, sections are organized according to the syntactic problems’ increasing degree of difficulty. Chapter 1 introduces the theory of M.J. Hashimoto (1978) to discuss the progressive change from the north to the south. For thousands of years, the Chinese language has been located between Altaic languages and different groups of southern languages. This partially explains syntactic changes in Chinese dialects in relation to their geographical location. These changes have had important impacts on Chinese word order, in which a reorganization of postverbal elements was brought about by the appearance of resultative verbs and aspectual markers. Chapter 2 deals with aspectual markers originating from verbs. All aspectual particles are the result of grammaticalization of verbs. Different pieces of evidence in diachronic and dialectal documents explain the syntactic and semantic constraints on these particles. In Chapter 3, it is argued that in Mandarin Chinese, time is expressed by adverbs and other expressions because a grammatical category of time does not exist as in morphological languages. The particle de in Mandarin is investigated in Chapter 4. It seems to be particular with regard to other dialects which do not possess it. Chapter 5 exploits the object marker ba, which formed around the 8th century AD. Its syntactic and semantic constraints indicate that contemporary Chinese needs a syntactic marker to clarify the relations between agent and patient. Chapter 6 is complementary to 5, studying the agent marker bei which also developed to satisfy a syntactic need in Chinese. Finally Chapter 7 analyzes different auxiliary verbs that imply different modal meanings.
