Abstract. The story of Khurâfa is a foundational text. It is one of the oldest to use the embedment in Arabic literature; also introducing a literary genre (9th century): the strange and amazing story of which this story will be the epitome, personified by the hero's name (Khurâfa), thus bringing the story to life. The underlying idea is that the process, which explains the purpose of the embedded narrative (to surprise and to amaze), was actually used to install literary practices that lead, through the pleasure of the text promoted as living being, to the Thousand and One Nights and the Middle Arabic literature.
