“The plot of the novel is Drogo's lifelong wait for a great war in which his life and the existence of the fort can prove its usefulness. The human need for giving life meaning and the soldier's desire for glory are themes in the novel. Drogo is posted to the remote outpost overlooking a desolate Tartar desert; he spends his career waiting for the barbarian horde rumored to live beyond the desert. Without noticing, Drogo finds that in his watch over the fort he has let years and decades pass and that, while his old friends in the city have had children, married, and lived full lives, he has come away with nothing except solidarity with his fellow soldiers in their long, patient vigil. When the attack by the Tartars finally arrives, Drogo gets ill and the new chieftain of the fortress dismisses him. Drogo, on his way back home, dies lonely in an inn.” (from Wikipedia)
« Jeune officier, Giovanni Drogo part prendre ses fonctions au fort Bastiani, une citadelle militaire plus ou moins déclassée, car elle n'est plus considérée comme stratégique. Au Nord, un désert, dit « des Tartares » pour une raison inconnue, sert de frontière avec un mystérieux royaume ennemi. Après une très longue carrière dans le fort, ritualisée par les activités routinières de la garnison, il voit arriver l'attaque du royaume du Nord qui à force d'être attendue est devenue mythique. Devenu âgé et malade, il est évacué pour des raisons médicales et se trouve frustré de sa part de gloire par de jeunes officiers ambitieux puisqu'il ne pourra participer au combat. Il se rend compte aux derniers instants du roman que son véritable adversaire n'était pas l'armée étrangère mais la mort. Il réalise alors que l'attente et les préparatifs d'un improbable combat n'ont été qu'un divertissement, une occupation, qui lui a permis d'oublier cette ennemie dont il avait si peur. » (de Wikipedia)
उपन्यास की कहानी द्रोगो नाम के एक लेफ्टीनेंट के पूरे जीवन की कहानी है जिसे वह तातारियों के आक्रमण के इंतज़ार में गुजार देता है। वह भी इस आशा में कि एक दिन वह अपने अस्तित्व को युद्ध के मैदान में सार्थकता प्रदान कर सकेगा। इसी बीच उसके सभी साथी जहाँ अपने-अपने जीवन में सार्थक अस्तित्व बनाने में सफल हो जाते हैं, वह खुद को ज़िंदगी के इम्तहान में पर कामयाब साबित कर सकने के इंतज़ार में लगा रहता है। पूरी ज़िंदगी इसी इंतज़ार में गुजारने के बाद जब अंत में एक दिन तातारियों का हमला सन्निकट प्रतीत होता है तभी उसे अपनी सेवामुक्ति का दुखद समाचार मिलता है। इस प्रकार आखिरी वक्त भी अपने पूरे जीवन को सार्थकता दे पाने का मौका द्रोगो के हाथ से निकल जाता है। स्वयं के अस्तित्व को सार्थक कर पाने के इंतज़ार में जहाँ एक तरफ वह खुद को अकेला पाता है वहीं दूसरी तरफ अपने साथियों द्वारा तिरस्कृत हुआ भी महसूस करता है।
