Une longue marche translinguistique: présence française dans la Nouvelle littérature tibétaine.

Résumé

The practice of translation has always been a highly significant literary and cultural activity in Tibet. Throughout their history Tibetans have translated a large amount of literary works, mainly Buddhist scriptures, from various Indian languages and Chinese language. After the Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1951, major changes have occurred in Tibetan society and culture. Literature was not an exception and literary translation under the Maoist rule, played a crucial role in promoting the new Chinese regime’s political credo and spreading the complete bulk of Maoist literature and propaganda which was translated from Chinese into Tibetan. The major radical change here was that henceforth Chinese language became the official language in Tibet and Tibetan became a secondary language among PRC Tibetans. So when in the early 1980s Tibetans started becoming aquainted with modern foreign literature from all over the world (novels, short stories, free verse poems, etc.), its reception almost exclusively occurred through the refractive lens of Chinese translations which were largely available in the whole PRC. The little number of Tibetan translations which existed were made via the official language, Chinese, which has served as relay language for those translations. The focal point here is that Chinese translations themselves were often made on the base of non-original translated works, the original text needing thus to make a translingual march via few relay languages – Chinese among others – before getting to the Tibetan target language.
