I shall concentrate here on one peculiar aspect of colonial societies – the creation ab nihilo of a new social group – and examine how it has functioned in the Russian North and how it is functioning nowadays. The new power, which started in 1917 to rule Russia, did not rely on massive support all over the country. The Northern areas, which had enriched the former regime mainly through the export of furs, were " terra incognita " for the new leaders of Russia. The Soviet power needed to have mediators, who would be able to ensure communication : this is the main political source of the emergence, in the 1930s, of a definite new social category – the indigenous intellectuals. In this article, I analyse the relationships between these intellectual and the political power form the beginning, where intellectuals represent the power to their emancipation in the last decades of the 20th century.

Je me concentre sur cet article sur une dimension particulière des sociétés coloniales, la création ab nihilo d'un nouveau groupe sociale, pour examiner comment celle-ci a fonctionné dans le Nord de la Russie et comment cela fonctionne de nos jours. Le nouveau pouvoir qui commence à gérer la Russie en 1917 ne bénéficiait pas d'un soutien massif dans l'ensemble du pays. Les aires du Nord, qui avaient enrichi pendant des siècles l'ancien régime grâce à l'exportation de fourrures, étaien pour les nouveaux leaders de la Russie "terra incognita". Le pouvoir soviétique devait avoir des médiateurs en mesure de garantir la communication: telle est l'origine politique de l'émergence dans les années 1930 d'une nouvelle catégorie sociale, les intellectuels autochtones. Dans cet article, j'analyse leurs relations avec le pouvoir depuis le début, où ces intellectuels représentent le pouvoir jusqu'à leur émancipation dans les dernières décennies du XXe siècle.
