Seapunk et vaporwave : Esthétiques prospectives de deux hétérotopies virtuelles

Abstract : Seapunk and vaporwave refer to micro-genres of electronic music that developed on the internet in the 2010s, but also to the associated aesthetics that were deployed concomitantly. These images are created by digital assemblies of heterogeneous elements – ancient statuary, landscapes and aquatic animals, computer compounds, references to video games –, drawing futuristic ruin landscapes from past elements, in particular from Antiquity and the 1990s. Hybrid, a-temporal and de-situated, seapunk and vaporwave thus construct virtual heterotopias, visual and affective refuges for nostalgic individu∙e∙s, terrified∙e∙s by a present eaten away by capitalism and its consumerism, and even more so by a dystopian ultra-technological future.
